Slovakia Halts Emergency Power Supplies to Ukraine in Tit-for-Tat Move.
Emergency Electricity Supplies from Slovakia to Ukraine Are Cut
According to UATV: Slovakia has suspended emergency electricity deliveries to Ukraine, a move announced by Prime Minister Robert Fico on February 23, 2023. Fico stated this decision is Bratislava's direct response to Kyiv's earlier cessation of Russian oil transit via the 'Druzhba' pipeline. This development underscores how energy infrastructure has become a tool of political leverage in the region.
The flow of Russian oil through the pipeline was halted on January 27, 2023, following a strike by the Russian army on the 'Druzhba' infrastructure. This event triggered significant shifts in energy relations between Ukraine and its neighbors. Ukraine last requested emergency assistance from Slovakia for its power grid over a month ago.
Robert Fico remarked: 'This is Bratislava's response to Kyiv's termination of Russian oil transit.'
Meanwhile, representatives of Ukrenergo, Ukraine's state energy company, reported they have not received official documentation regarding a unilateral termination of the contract. This situation threatens to impact Ukraine's energy stability, which is already under severe strain from the ongoing war and rising demand for resources.
Mounting Tensions in the Region
Slovakia's action highlights the growing strain in relations between Ukraine and some of its neighbors concerning the war and energy security. The suspension of power supplies could have adverse effects on Ukraine's energy infrastructure and overall stability, particularly during periods of high electricity demand.
The official response from Ukrenergo and the potential for further negotiations between Ukraine and Slovakia are likely to shape the future of energy relations in Central Europe.
