England star Millie Bright retires from international career: reasons for the decision.
Millie Bright has retired from the England national team
According to The Sun: Hero of English football Millie Bright has announced her retirement from international tournaments.
The Chelsea star marked her 300th match for the team during a 1-0 victory over Tottenham in the women's Premier League on Sunday.
APHowever, after she failed to make Sarina Wiegman’s squad during the Euro qualifying this summer, Bright decided to retire from the yellow and blue colors.
In her podcast 'The Rest is Football: Daly Brightness,' the 32-year-old athlete confessed that wearing the national team jersey will always be special for her.
“The reality of the last decade wearing the Three Lions surpassed even my biggest dreams. It has been incredibly special for me, and I wish it could go on forever. However, in football, all good things must come to an end, and that is why I have decided to end my international career.”
Bright debuted for the national team in September 2016, earning 88 caps for England as well as three matches for Great Britain at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
“This is a personal decision I made to focus on club football and give Chelsea everything they need from me.”
“I always strive to leave the team in a better state than when I joined, so what better time than now to step back and give the new generation of Lionesses a chance, after what they achieved this summer.”
“I know they will achieve even greater successes in the future, and I will be their biggest fan.”
“To my teammates, coaches, staff, friends, family, and of course, the fans, thank you. Your faith and support have meant the world to me, and that is something I will always cherish.”
Bright captained the England team at the Women’s World Cup 2023, where the Lionesses ultimately lost to Spain in the final. However, she made an assist on one of the three goals that led the England team to their first World Cup final.
In the podcast, she also shared that her priorities have changed, and she wants to spend more time with her family, friends, and herself, which became important in the summer.
“Millie will forever remain an England legend for everything she has done for her country, and I can never adequately express praise for her impact during my time.”
Bright remains the captain of the reigning Women’s Premier League champions Chelsea, who currently lead the league by one point, aiming for a seventh consecutive title.
Millie Bright's retirement from the England national team marks the culmination of her remarkable story in international football. Her contribution to victories and the development of women's football in the country cannot be overstated. Bright leaves the team on the backdrop of success, but will always remain an important part of its history.
