Security guarantees for Ukraine

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that the security guarantees for Ukraine must include multinational troops, particularly involving American soldiers. She expressed this opinion on August 31 during her speech at a defense plant in the Bulgarian town of Sopot, as reported by FREEДOM's special correspondent in Europe.

'As we all know, no one wants peace more than Ukraine. For a just and lasting peace, Ukraine needs strong security guarantees. We are currently working on these guarantees. But I can say that the first line of defense is a strong, well-equipped Armed Forces of Ukraine capable of deterring further attacks. I often say that Ukraine should be a steel hedgehog, indigestible for potential invaders. The second line of defense will be a 'coalition of the willing', multinational troops with the support of Americans. And finally, the third line of defense is a strong European defense position,' the European Commission President stated.

She also noted that the plant in Sopot is significant not only for Ukraine's security but also for the security of the entire European Union.

'What you are doing here is exactly the contribution needed, as you produce ammunition. This helps Ukraine get the much-needed munitions to strengthen the Armed Forces. But it is also production to replenish our own stocks in the European Union. Thus, you make a dual contribution to the security guarantees for Ukraine and, of course, to the security of Europeans,' Ursula von der Leyen emphasized.

Clear security guarantees

Earlier, political scientist Igor Petrenko stressed that security guarantees for Ukraine must be clear and have legal force. It is important to consider all aspects to avoid ambiguities or gaps in the legal framework. For Ukraine, significant security guarantees are those that bring it closer to NATO membership, but the mere Article 5 of the Alliance is not enough.

Security guarantees, as stated by Ursula von der Leyen, are critically important for ensuring stability in the region. Strengthening Ukraine's defense capabilities, including international military forces and establishing cooperation with partners, underline the overall course towards enhancing security not only for Ukraine but for the entire European Union. This topic remains a focal point for international politicians, as Ukraine's security directly impacts the security of Europe as a whole.
