U.S. Slaps Sanctions on Cuba’s President and His Family: Key Details.
U.S. Sanctions Target Cuban Leadership
According to Espreso.tv: The United States has imposed sanctions on five individuals and five entities, including Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel and members of his family. These measures were announced by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) under the U.S. Treasury Department. The list of sanctioned individuals includes:
- Cuba’s sitting president, Miguel Díaz-Canel
- his wife
- his stepson
- his son
- a grandson of former Cuban President Raúl Castro
The sanctioned entities are:
- Cuba’s Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces
- the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples
- the mining company Minera La Victoria S.A.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Washington is targeting a network that sustains and funds Cuba’s subversive and radical operations. He added:
'They will no longer tolerate radical Marxist regimes that export their poisonous and malevolent revolution.' Marco Rubio
A Long-Standing U.S. Policy
These sanctions are part of a decades-long U.S. policy that includes a trade embargo against Cuba. The Trump administration is preparing for a potential collapse of the Cuban regime this summer, while U.S. intelligence is assessing how Cuba might respond to possible American military action.
The move highlights ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Cuba, which have persisted since the Cold War. As the Trump administration seeks to intensify pressure on Díaz-Canel’s government, this could lead to further regional escalation. Observers suggest such actions may trigger shifts in Cuba’s political landscape, but the impact on ordinary Cubans could be severe, as sanctions largely affect the country’s economic conditions.
