Simple way to get rid of odor in your washing machine: you only need lemon and toothpaste.
How to prevent mold in your washing machine
According to The Sun: You can prevent the growth of mold in your washing machine by using a simple remedy that costs only 89 pence, and it won't take long.
Unpleasant odors often arise from the accumulation of mold and detergent that settles in seals, filters, and drawers.
GettyTikTok users in the UK are praising a trick from Kerry (@kerriemariehome), who recommends using a simple and inexpensive two-ingredient trick that helps keep washing machines clean and clothes fresh.
Her recipe is very simple: one lemon and a bit of toothpaste. Kerry cuts the lemon in half, applies toothpaste to each half, and then throws them into an empty machine, running a hot wash cycle.
“Does your washing machine have an unpleasant smell? Use this quick trick,” she told her followers.
“Throw the lemon halves into your empty washing machine and run it on a quick cycle with very hot water. “After the cycle is done, you'll have a fresh-smelling washing machine – and for a very low price.”
The video shows the mixture fizzing and foaming in the drum. Some were initially skeptical, but others quickly expressed their delight with this unusual combination.
“I was surprised at how clean and shiny my washing machine became after this! And the smell is just wonderful, 1000 percent recommend,” wrote one fan.
“Lemon also works in the dishwasher. It acts as a rinse aid.”
The cost of lemons at Aldi is 79 pence (about 20 pence per lemon), and Dentitex toothpaste costs 69 pence, making the total cost less than £1.
Why does this trick work?
Cleaning expert Anna Louisa (@anna_louisa_at_home) explained why it works: “Toothpaste is slightly abrasive, so it helps remove dirt and debris that has built up. “The acid in lemon juice acts as a natural antibacterial agent, so they complement each other perfectly for cleaning your washing machine!”
To prevent unpleasant odors from returning, experts advise regularly cleaning these parts, occasionally running hot cycles, using less detergent, removing items immediately, and leaving the door open to dry.
