Each council in England received a share of £742 million, which can be distributed among families and individuals in need of assistance.

Conditions for receiving vouchers

Residents of Surrey will be able to apply for supermarket vouchers worth up to £300. To receive this support, you must be over 18 and reside in Surrey.

You must also have savings of up to £2,000 and a household income of less than £27,007.50 before tax deductions.

After applying, you may be asked for documents confirming this information, such as bank statements.

The amount you receive will depend on your household composition. Families with children will receive a £300 voucher, while singles will receive only £200.

These vouchers can be used at participating supermarkets, but cannot be spent on lottery tickets, tobacco, or fuel.

What to do if I don’t live in Surrey?

The £742 million Household Support Fund is distributed among all councils in England. If you do not live in this area but are facing financial difficulties or receiving assistance, you are likely to be able to receive support.

The amount of assistance will depend on your place of residence. For example, households in Doncaster can apply for assistance of £300, while families in Nottingham may receive energy vouchers of £98 and supermarket vouchers worth £75.

Pensioners in Islington may receive cash assistance of £200 to cover heating costs this winter.

Clarification of the Household Support Fund

Sun Savers editor Lana Clements explains what you need to know about the Household Support Fund.

If you are struggling to pay energy and water bills, food, or other essential goods and services, the Household Support Fund can provide crucial support. This financial assistance is limited but offers low-income families extra help to cope with living costs.

Each council in England received a share of £421 million to distribute this assistance among local low-income households. Each local authority decides how to provide this support. Some offer vouchers, while others provide direct cash payments.

It is important to contact your local authority to find out what is available. Don’t delay; the program has been extended until April 2025, but your council may distribute its funds earlier. If the funding runs out, you may not receive support, so it’s vital to apply as soon as possible.
