Diesel vs. Petrol: Which Engine Lasts Longer in 2024

According to inkorr.com: The durability of diesel engines was once considered an undeniable advantage over petrol engines. However, with the advancement of technology in the automotive industry and the complexity of modern motor designs, the question arises: do diesel engines really last longer?

In recent years, petrol engines have undergone significant changes. Manufacturers have implemented turbocharging, direct fuel injection, advanced electronic control systems, and improved materials. As a result, many petrol engines can now cover 300,000 to 400,000 kilometers without major repairs, provided they are properly maintained.

Diesel engines are also evolving, but their designs have become more complex. Exhaust cleaning systems, turbochargers, particulate filters, and gas recirculation increase efficiency but also raise risks and costs. Improper use or low-quality fuel can lead to DPF or EGR failures, as well as issues with injectors or fuel pumps.

“In the past, diesel had a clear advantage due to its massive construction and low RPM operation,” experts explain. Indeed, older diesel engines could cover a million kilometers without serious intervention. However, modern realities are different: electronics and environmental standards have made diesels more finicky.

Key Resource Factors

Today, the reliability of an engine is influenced not only by its design features. Important factors include:

  • fuel quality;

  • regular maintenance;

  • usage conditions;

  • driving style.

In the Ukrainian fuel market, there is a risk of low-quality diesel fuel, which can lead to rapid wear of high-pressure systems. Although petrol engines are also sensitive to low-quality fuel, it is usually less critical.

Proper usage is crucial. Long trips at a constant speed positively impact the lifespan of a diesel engine as they help clean the particulate filter. In contrast, frequent short trips and cold starts create additional strain on both types of engines.

How to Extend Engine Lifespan

Experts provide the following recommendations:

  • fuel only at trusted gas stations;

  • change oil and filters on time;

  • monitor engine performance and respond to the first signs of malfunction;

  • use recommended lubricants and fuels;

  • periodically ensure the engine operates at stable RPMs.

“The lifespan of a modern engine depends more on care than on the type of fuel,” mechanics emphasize. Drivers who adhere to the rules can travel hundreds of thousands of kilometers regardless of whether they drive diesel or petrol.

Thus, the advantage of diesel engines in terms of longevity is no longer unequivocal. Petrol units have approached diesels, and the complexity of modern diesel systems may even increase the risk of severe failures. Today, the choice between diesel and petrol depends on operational conditions and the driver’s willingness to adhere to technical discipline.
