Holy Evening December 24: 12 Dishes, Traditions, and Main Prohibitions of the Holiday.
According to ТСН: Holy Evening is a holiday celebrated on the eve of Christmas, filled with symbolism and meaning. It combines Christian traditions with folk customs. The main tradition of this evening is to gather around the family table when the first star appears in the sky.
Folk Traditions of Holy Evening
The day before Christmas is dedicated to preparations, cleaning the house, and prayers. During Holy Evening, until the appearance of the first star, the family would eat nothing, symbolizing the anticipation of Christ's birth.
Housewives meticulously cleaned the house, laid new or clean tablecloths and towels, and prepared festive attire. Preparations for dinner began in advance, as the strict Christmas fast lasts until December 25.
Before the start of dinner, the host would bring the Didukh - a sheaf of wheat or rye, symbolizing the spirit of ancestors and prosperity. Traditionally, the table was covered with hay, and garlic cloves were placed in the corners to protect the home from evil forces. Then, a festive tablecloth was laid, and a Christmas candle was lit, symbolizing Divine light.
On the table, 12 lean dishes symbolizing the 12 apostles were placed. Kutya and uzvar held a place of honor, considered God's food. Kutya was tasted first; sometimes the host would throw a spoon of this dish to the ceiling, believing that the number of grains sticking would indicate how the year would be.
Dinner began with a prayer. Silence and respect for each other reigned at the table. It was believed that how the Holy Evening went would determine the whole year.

Holy Evening Today
Today, many traditions remain relevant, while others adapt to modern life. Although not everyone adheres to strict fasting, 12 lean dishes are usually prepared on Holy Evening, which have significant symbolic meaning.
Holy Evening continues to be a day of family unity, returning home, and remembering the ancestors. The whole family sits down to eat only after the first star appears. Before the meal, everyone prays and recites 'Our Father'.
On this day, relatives exchange gifts, decorate their homes with Christmas decorations, sing carols, and uphold the spirit of this festive time.
Ritual traditions have preserved vividly, especially in the western regions, where the Didukh is ceremoniously brought in and active caroling begins from Holy Evening itself.
On this day, it is strictly forbidden to curse, slander, or speak poorly of others. Holy Evening should take place in a friendly atmosphere. Loud festivities are recommended to be postponed until after the meal, which marks the beginning of carols in honor of Christ's birth.
Holy Evening remains an important moment in the lives of Ukrainians. It is a time for family reunions, customs, and rituals that are passed down from generation to generation. By preserving traditions, we honor the past and lay the foundations for future holidays.
