Power outages will last until March: expert names the main reason.
According to ТСН: Ukrainians should not expect a quick improvement in the electricity supply situation. Power outages are likely to last at least until early March, as the winter months are critical for the energy system due to a significant increase in consumption.
Co-founder of the Institute for Energy Strategies Yuri Korolchuk emphasized that even without new powerful attacks and the possibility of conducting repair work, the energy system will not be able to quickly return to a stable mode.
Winter Period Situation
The expert stresses that many households use electricity not only for household needs but also for heating, which significantly increases the load on the electricity grid.
“Stabilization is only possible when the electricity consumption for heating decreases. In winter, this creates critical pressure on the system,” Kolorchuk explained.
He also noted that it is impossible to quickly compensate for such a load in conditions of stable generation, especially in the absence of new damages. Therefore, energy workers are forced to implement long and uneven disconnection schedules in different regions.
Temporary Improvement of the Situation
Some improvements that Ukrainians have observed recently were temporary. During the New Year and Christmas holidays, electricity consumption decreased, allowing for the release of about 2000 MW of capacity and slightly balancing the situation even in frosty weather.
However, after returning to the usual regime, the demand for electricity has risen again, and the load in the system has resumed. This, according to the expert, indicates that the energy system does not have sufficient reserve strength.
Future of Electricity Supply
Real stabilization, according to Korolchuk, is possible only after the heating season ends. Reducing the need for electric heating will automatically lower the load on the grids, allowing for more efficient distribution of existing generation resources.
“Even if the strikes stop and there is time for repairs, the situation will not fundamentally change by the end of winter,” the expert concluded.
Thus, Ukrainians continue to face difficulties in energy supply. Restoring stability in the energy system depends not only on external factors but also on electricity consumption during the winter season. Experts urge for careful consumption to alleviate the load on the grids during this critical period.
