Seven Mountain Sites in the Carpathians Selected for Wind Power Plants: What You Need to Know.
Territorial Planning Adjustments for the Zakarpattia Region
According to Espreso.tv: The advocacy group 'Free Svydovets' has announced revisions to the territorial planning scheme for Ukraine's Zakarpattia region. These changes identify seven high-altitude locations in the Carpathian Mountains as potential sites for wind power plants (WPPs). This move follows a directive issued on November 23, 2025, by Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko, aimed at expanding alternative energy sources. For an English-speaking audience, this marks a significant step in Ukraine's push for energy diversification amid ongoing geopolitical challenges.
Wind Energy Prospects and Community Involvement
All seven selected sites are situated at elevations exceeding 800 meters in the Carpathians, making them promising for wind energy projects. However, the Ministry of Defense has declined to disclose the exact locations of these plots, raising questions among local communities. The Zakarpattia Regional Military Administration (RMA) is currently preparing draft amendments to the region's planning scheme, with a strong emphasis on renewable energy.
Several local communities have already proposed hosting wind energy infrastructure. These include:
- Mizhhirska
- Nyzhnovoritska
- Stavnenska
- Teresvyanska
- Bohdanska
- Dubivska
Together, they have suggested 10 specific WPP installations within their territories. Additionally, 15 alternative plots have been identified as potential locations for further wind energy development.
These initiatives represent a crucial stride toward energy independence and the adoption of clean energy sources in Ukraine.
This development underscores Ukraine's growing commitment to renewable energy, particularly as it seeks to reduce reliance on traditional power sources. Identifying new wind farm locations could not only bolster energy self-sufficiency but also generate employment opportunities in regions in need of economic revitalization.
Nevertheless, it remains essential to consider the perspectives of local residents and the environmental implications of such projects.
