New head of MI6 warned about the export of chaos from Russia: what does it mean.
According to ТСН: The new head of British intelligence MI6, Blais Metreveli, cautioned about a complex threat from Russia, noting that Putin's regime seeks to promote 'export of chaos' to the West.
Uncertainty in relations with Russia
According to Metreveli, Putin is launching a new 'era of uncertainty', carefully altering the unwritten rules of conflict. She emphasizes that this is not just about open military actions but also about covert attacks from the 'grey zone'.
“We all know about the planned diversions, killings, cyber attacks, cybercrime, and drone attacks. These concepts are well known and deeply rooted in public consciousness.”
Security experts believe that a new aspect of the Kremlin's covert war will be the involvement of private individuals, organizations, movements, and companies acting in Russia's interests.
Examples of Russia's activities
In this context, Jan Marsalek, the former COO of Wirecard, a German payment processing company, who worked for over 10 years for the Russian military intelligence agency GRU, is mentioned. Also cited is the example of Dylan Earl, a criminal who led the arson of a warehouse in East London where aid for Ukraine was stored, and who was recruited online by the Russian PMC 'Wagner'.
“When we think about Russian aggression and attempts to sow discord among Western allies, we need to expand our understanding of how far the Kremlin is willing to go in all areas of life to cause destruction and spread concern.”
Metreveli highlighted the importance of realizing the scale of Russia's 'grey zone' covert network and the potential damage Moscow could inflict on vulnerable targets using hidden agents.
“As the war in Ukraine approaches its fifth year, and efforts to reach a peace agreement continue, we can expect an increase in activity in this space. Britain and Europe must be ready.”
These warnings emphasize how crucial it is for countries to be prepared to protect their interests amidst the growing threat. In particular, Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, recently posted a video on X showing a strike by an 'Oreshnik' in Lviv region, threatening war in Europe. These actions add to the concern regarding stability in the region.
