Biography of Maria Burmaka
Birth Date: 16.06.1970
Place of Birth. Education. Maria Burmaka was born in Kharkiv. In 2004, she graduated from the Institute of Journalism at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. She holds a PhD in Philology.
Creative Career. In 1989, she won the Grand Prix of the 'Oberig' author's song festival in Lutsk. She became a laureate of the 'Chervona Ruta' festival in Chernivtsi. In 1990, she released her first audio cassette 'Mariyka Burmaka. Oh, do not bloom, spring'.
In 1992, the album 'Maria' was released, becoming the first Ukrainian album in history.
In 1994, the second album 'Hope Remains' was released.
In 1995, Maria pursued journalism, preparing the author's program 'KIN (Culture, Information, News)', which was repeatedly recognized as the best cultural project on Ukrainian television.
In 1998, an acoustic concert of Maria took place at the National Art Museum of Ukraine, during which the album 'I Love Again' was presented. In the same year, Maria Burmaka received the title of 'Honored Artist of Ukraine'.
In 2001, the album 'MIA' was released, and Maria's music acquired a soft rock style with elements of acid jazz.
In 2002, a disc of electronic remixes of Burmaka's songs titled 'I AM' was released. In the same year, another disc - a special Christmas edition - was also released.
In 2003, the disc 'Maria Burmaka. Live' was released. The following year - the release of 'N9', a collection of songs from ten of the singer's albums over 15 years of creative activity 'We are Going'.
December 2004 - the release of the compact disc 'We are Going', a collection of selected songs from 10 albums.
Throughout 2005, Maria Burmaka recorded several English-language versions of her songs and filmed new music videos, held charity concerts in North America.
In 2007, Maria Burmaka released an MP3 collection on two discs 'All albums of Maria Burmaka', and in 2008 - a CD 'Soundtracks'. The album included songs 'Sorry', 'Not to that one', 'Failed to say goodbye', 'Happy Birthday, Sun!'.
In 2008, Maria Burmaka was a member of the jury of the literary award 'Book of the Year BBC'.
In 2010 - recording a joint album 'Don’t laugh at me' as part of the Operation Respect campaign with Peter Yarrow ('Peter, Paul and Mary'). And in 2011 - a joint performance at the Soyuzivka festival.
Since May 2011 - Maria Burmaka has been hosting her author's column 'Breakfast Music' on the 1+1 channel. And since September 2011 - the host of the project 'Music for Adults with Maria Burmaka' on the TVi channel.
In the summer and autumn of 2014, as part of the 'Support Our Own' tour, she performed in the ATO zone, in frontline cities and participated in concerts, the proceeds from which were spent on the needs of volunteer battalions. She is actively engaged in volunteer and charitable activities.
In 2014, she released the album 'Shadows on Water'. In the same year, she held a solo charity concert in Paris, with the proceeds donated to the 'Tabletki' fund and participated in a Ukrainian festival in Chicago, with the proceeds going to the 'Support the Heroes Fund'.
At the end of 2014, she was included in the TOP-100 most influential women of Ukraine according to 'Focus' magazine.
In winter 2015, the singer held charity concerts in the UK. In the spring of the same year, Maria Burmaka's charity concerts took place in the USA. In November, in Canada.
In 2015, the premieres of the songs 'Dance', 'Golden Autumn' (in memory of Mykola Mozhovyi), 'Frisbee' and the video for the composition 'You' marked her life.
In May 2016, the singer presented a romantic video for the song 'If We Were'. And already in September of the same year, at the Caribbean club concert hall, she, along with the Gypsy Lyre group, presented the musical program 'New and Favorite'.
Awards and Honors. Maria Burmaka holds the title of People's Artist of Ukraine. She was awarded the Order of Princess Olga III degree.
Family Connections. Maria Burmaka is divorced. She raises a daughter. Her cousin is Yuriy Pavlenko, former Minister for Family, Youth and Sports.
Hobbies. She loves to draw and sew.
