2013 – Ukrainian junior champion in 400 m freestyle and 1500 m.
In November 2015, he won the gold medal in a World Cup event in Doha, Qatar, in the 1500 m freestyle.

This is Romančuk's personal record. This result also represents a Ukrainian record and a European record. The previous European record was 7:29.17, set in 2012 by the Frenchman Yannick Agnel.
In May 2021, at the European Championship in Budapest, Hungary, he won the gold medal in the 1500 m freestyle in the final with a time of 14:39.89. In 800 m, Michail repeated his success and again won the gold medal with a time of 7:42.61..
On July 27, 2021, he set national and Olympic records with a time of 7:41.28 and qualified for the final in the 800 m freestyle at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
