Serena Williams crowned Hodkinson champion: a £20,000 tiara was at stake in New York.
Keely Hodgkinson triumphed at the competitions in New York
According to The Sun: Keely Hodgkinson, the British athlete, received the traditional crown from tennis legend Serena Williams worth £20,000 after winning the women's Athlos competition in New York.
This Team GB star, who hoped for gold but won a bronze medal at the Tokyo Games last month, recorded an impressive time of 1:56.53.
GettyAt 23, Keely finished her injured season, receiving the crown from Williams, who oversees this project with her husband.
Her compatriot Georgia Hunter-Bell, the world silver medalist, finished second with a time of 1:58.33.
Olympic champion Hodgkinson noted:
“I’m sure it was easier for me since I rarely competed this season.”
“The atmosphere was crazy, so it was really a lot of fun.”
A new challenge on the road to the Los Angeles Olympics
Hodgkinson is eagerly awaiting a meeting with the versatile Femke Bol, who plans to switch from the 400 meters hurdles to the 800 meters in 2026.
She is the current Olympic champion at that distance and one of the fastest women in history.
Keely is not afraid of the challenges posed by meeting the Dutch athlete:
“She texted me before announcing her transition. We are very close friends, and I value our friendship.”
“I hope she can succeed too, but it may take her time to adjust to the new distance. It's a completely different level.”
The British athlete won the competition at the 800-meter distance.
