Tennis player received a four-year ban for doping: unusual explanation from the player.
Four years for a banned test
According to The Sun: The tennis player Gonzalo Oliveira, 30 years old, was banned from competitions for four years by the International Tennis Integrity Agency due to an unusual explanation regarding a positive doping test.
Oliveira failed the drug test last November during the ATP Challenger tournament in Manzanillo, Mexico.
GettyReason for the positive test
Oliveira provided two samples, A and B, which tested positive for methamphetamine. He was provisionally banned in January.
The player, who represents Venezuela, claimed that the presence of the drug could be the result of a kiss.
As reported by the newspaper The Athletic, Oliveira contacted a woman whose name has not been disclosed to testify on his behalf.
She testified that the couple: “Stopped kissing” after she “took a pill that gave me a feeling of euphoria, excitement, self-confidence in conversation, and in the moment a feeling of energy and joy.”
Arbitration decision
Oliveira appealed to an independent arbitration court, which confirmed the four-year ban, emphasizing that the athlete did not prove his claim that the kiss was the source of the positive test.
The time he spent under provisional suspension will be counted towards the main suspension period.
Thus, he may return to competitions in January 2029.
In 2017, Oliveira achieved a personal record by breaking into the top 200 of the men's singles ranking.
Success in doubles
In doubles competitions, he achieved greater success by entering the top 100 and setting a personal record at position 77.
This situation underscores the importance of adhering to anti-doping regulations in sports, as even unusual explanations cannot always convince. Oliveira intends to return to competition and rebuild his career, but he must spend time away from professional tennis. This poses a challenge not only for his physical preparation but also for his moral compass, as the athlete's task is to uphold the purity of sports.
