The Opening of a Unique Subway Station in Italy

According to The Sun: Recently, a subway station opened in Italy that looks as if it were from another planet. The new Monte Sant'Angelo station is located on the outskirts of Naples.

The creation of the station took 20 years and is part of a project for the urban and cultural revival of Naples. Sculptor Anish Kapoor was invited to design the station back in 2003, but it only opened in September 2025. Kapoor is also known for his significant works, such as the ArcelorMittal Orbit in London and Sky Mirror in Kensington Gardens.

“In the city of Vesuvius and the mythical entrance to Dante's Hell, I thought it important to try to understand what it really means to go underground,” Kapoor said.

The sculpture at the entrance is made of corrosion-resistant steel and has an oval shape. Two escalators lead to the platforms, and underground, the station looks quite ordinary.

The new subway station is located on the grounds of the University of Naples and connects the western part of the city with the center, as well as the Phlegraean area. It also provides access to the Cumana and Circumflegrea railways, as well as the Montesanto funicular and line 2 of the subway.

“The city is also famous for fried pizza (pizza fritta), which can be tasted for just a few euros at the small pizzeria Di Matteo, where during a presidential visit, Bill Clinton enjoyed a few slices.”
“The waiters at Trattoria da Nennella in the Spanish Quarter are capable of spontaneously singing and dancing. The sounds of Italian pop music are as delicious as the dishes on the tables with checkered tablecloths.”
