The Ukrainian dish "Pierogi Ruskie" was demonstrated on their Facebook page by representatives of The New York Times.
"A wonderful recipe that comes up when there are leftover mashed potatoes. Pierogi are always on the menu of historic Polish restaurants, which were once socialist canteens. This recipe for Russian pierogi stuffed with potatoes and cheese."
The name "Pierogi Ruskie" caused outrage among network users who believe that this name belongs to the Ukrainian dish, varenyky.
"For your information. Pierogi are only Polish, they are an analogue of Ukrainian varenyky. There has never been such a dish in Russia" - Yevhen Klopotenko.
Ukrainian anthropologist and writer from the Galicia region, known online as Pani Stefa, explained that the name "Pierogi Ruskie" has Polish origins and refers to a certain type of dumplings with potato and cheese filling.
"These are Ukrainian varenyky, but in Poland they are called 'Russian pierogi.' This name comes from Ruthenia and is related to the history when Saint Jacek brought them to Poland after a visit to Kyiv" - Pani Stefa.
The name of the dish caused disputes among commentators under the post, where half accused the publication of insufficient fact-checking, and the other half explained that "ruski" is not the same as "Russians."
UNESCO recognized Ukrainian dishes and Odesa
Ukrainian borscht was included in the list of intangible cultural heritage that needs protection two years ago.
This year, the historical center of Odesa was also included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.
