Thomas Tuchel has not communicated with Mason Greenwood

According to The Sun: The England national team coach Thomas Tuchel has not yet contacted striker Mason Greenwood after his decision to play for Jamaica.

The Marseille striker Greenwood chose to represent Jamaica, although he previously played only one match for England – against Iceland five years ago.

Possible return to the England squad

However, the return of the former Manchester United player to the England squad became possible after he changed his decision. Tuchel noted:

“I have not communicated with him until this time. I have not spoken either with him or with his team. My opinion was that he was trying to play for Jamaica, so we did not pay more attention to this.”

“He is currently not in our sights. I do not rule out any options, but for now, he is not a priority.”

Greenwood was sent home from Iceland after violating COVID-19 rules along with Phil Foden, inviting two women to the team hotel.

In October 2022, he was charged with attempted rape, causing bodily harm, and controlling and coercive behavior. In February 2023, all charges were dropped.

Position of the Jamaica coach

Jamaica coach Steve McClaren expressed disappointment that Greenwood did not accept the invitation to the national team.

McClaren stated:

“We got the passport and hoped he would join this camp, but in conversation with his family, he is not planning to commit to anyone at this moment.”

“This is a bit disheartening, we probably need to be more patient.”

“We will continue to try because I know from conversations with Mason that he loves Jamaica.”

“He wants to focus on club football and wouldn't want to commit to an international team at this moment.”

“This is disappointing for everyone, as he would be a great asset and would enjoy playing.”

The situation surrounding Mason Greenwood remains tense. After a likely return to the England squad, his decision not to play for the country, coupled with controversial past events, continues to attract media and specialist attention. Meanwhile, Tuchel and McClaren are trying to find an understanding about this issue, although the prospects remain uncertain.
