Additional financial support for pensioners

According to The Sun: Thousands of pensioners will be able to apply for winter financial assistance of up to £300 in just a few days.

Over nine million people will receive a winter fuel payment to help cover energy costs during the colder months.

The majority of those eligible for the payment will receive it automatically, and in October and November, they will receive letters from DWP with information about the payment amount.

However, some pensioners will need to apply for this assistance.

How to apply

Applications can be made by post or phone; DWP application lines will open on October 13, while postal applications have been possible since September 15.

Pensioners have until March 31, 2026, to submit their applications.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has indicated that those receiving the following benefits do not need to apply:

  • State Pension
  • Pension Credit
  • Universal Credit
  • Care Allowance
  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • Carer's Allowance
  • Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • Income Support
  • Employment Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA)
  • Payments under the War Pension Scheme
  • Disability Benefit from work-related injuries
  • Sickness Benefit
  • Death Benefit from work-related injuries

If you do not receive any of these payments, you will need to apply manually unless you have received winter financial assistance previously or have deferred your state pension since your last payment.

Eligibility for assistance

The maximum amount of financial support is £300, but the final amount will depend on the date of birth and circumstances in the qualifying week, which ran from September 15 to 21 this year.

Pensioners born before September 22, 1959, with an income of up to £35,000, may receive between £100 and £300 to cover heating costs.

To qualify for this assistance, you must be at least 66 years old at the end of the qualifying week.

If your annual income exceeds £35,000, you will not be eligible; HMRC will automatically return the paid amount via your tax code or declaration.

Your income may consist of various sources, including private pension and state benefits.

Among others, those unable to receive the payment include:

  • those living outside England and Wales;
  • those who were in the hospital receiving free treatment for the entire week from September 15 to 21, 2025, and the previous year;
  • those who need permission to enter the UK, and your permit states that you cannot receive public funds;
  • those who were in prison for the entire week from September 15 to 21, 2025.

The winter fuel payment was scrapped for 10 million pensioners last year, and only those receiving certain payments were eligible for it. However, the government reversed this decision under public pressure, and funding is again available for millions.

Additional information about this program and how to apply can be found on the gov.uk website.

Pensioners are also advised to be cautious of scammers impersonating DWP and trying to get you to click on fraudulent links to apply. The government notes that such messages are not official and should be ignored.

Winter heating assistance is different from the comfort discount, which offers struggling households a £150 discount on their electricity bill. The money is not paid directly but is applied as a discount to the respective supplier's bill.

What energy bill assistance is available?

What energy bill assistance is available?

There are several ways to get help paying energy bills for those facing financial difficulties.

If you have debts, contact your supplier to find out if they can offer a debt repayment plan before transferring you to a prepayment meter.

This involves repaying the debt in installments over time.

If the repayment plan offered by your supplier does not work for you, contact them again to see if a more favorable deal is possible.

Many energy companies have programs to assist customers struggling with bills.

However, the eligibility for this assistance depends on the supplier, and the amount you can receive varies depending on your financial circumstances.

For example, customers of British Gas or Scottish Gas who are struggling to pay their bills can receive grants of up to £2,000.

British Gas also provides assistance through the British Gas Trust and the Family Fund.

To apply for the latter fund, you do not have to be a British Gas customer.

EDF, E.ON, Octopus Energy, and Scottish Power also offer grants for customers in financial difficulties.

Unfortunately, thousands of vulnerable households miss out on essential help and support because they are not registered with the Priority Services Register (PSR).

This service supports vulnerable households, including the elderly and sick.

Benefits include disconnection warnings, free gas checks, and additional support if you run into difficulties.

Contact your energy company to see if you can apply.
