Energy tariffs are rising: 5 simple ways to reduce your heating bills.
According to The Sun: Autumn chill will soon reach our homes, and you will probably want to turn on the heating.
However, energy price increases mean families will pay £35 more for their bills starting this month. But there are ways to save.
Families are forced to pay £35 more for their energy bills starting this monthJoanna O'Loan, 'knowledge manager' at Energy Saving Trust, said: “Even small changes can help reduce energy bills and make you more comfortable in the colder months.”
Tips for reducing costs
Here are some simple and inexpensive changes that can save significantly, according to a non-profit organization:
- DRAFT PROTECTION: Gaps and cracks in your home allow warm air to escape. Using draft tape around windows and doors can save about £40 a year.
- If you have an open flue, installing a vent flap can save another £60 a year.
- RADIOATER IDEA: Air trapped in radiators creates cold spots and prevents heating from working efficiently. Bleeding the radiators is a simple procedure that takes just a few minutes. A step-by-step guide is available at toolstation.com.
- After bleeding, attach reflective panels or use foil on radiators to reflect heat back into the room.
- Keep furniture away from radiators to avoid blocking heat, and raise the radiator temperature in the rooms you use while lowering it in those you don’t. These steps can save around £25 a year.
- THERMOSTAT PROTECTION: Reducing the thermostat temperature by a degree can save around £90 a year. The optimal temperature for most people is between 18 and 21 degrees.
- Modern hot water tanks have sufficient insulation, but older ones may not. A hot water tank insulation jacket costing around £20 can save around £40 on bills each year.
- You can save an additional £6 a year by insulating exposed hot water pipes.
