Trump instructed the US military to plan an invasion of Greenland: operation details.
According to ТСН: US President Donald Trump has instructed the US Special Operations Command to develop a plan for an invasion of Greenland.
Sources in US political and military circles report that Trump's team believes it is important to act quickly to seize control of the island before Russia or China does.
Plans and countermeasures
President's advisor on homeland security Stephen Miller is actively promoting this plan. According to information from interlocutors, the idea was inspired by a recent US operation in Venezuela that resulted in the capture of former President Nicolas Maduro. The administration believes this case could serve as an example for more decisive actions in the future.
However, American military officials oppose such actions, claiming that an invasion of Greenland would be illegal and would not gain the support of the US Congress. One diplomatic source characterized Trump's idea as
“mad and illegal”and added that generals are trying to steer the president away by proposing alternative large-scale operations.
“They say it’s like talking to a five-year-old child”– notes a source from Daily Mail.
Greenland and Trump's threats
In early January, the US conducted Operation “Absolute Resolve” in Venezuela, during which American forces struck targets in the country and extracted Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who were accused of “narcoterrorism” and drug smuggling.
Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, which gained enhanced self-governance in 2009.
After returning to the White House in January 2025, Trump has repeatedly expressed his intent to include Greenland in the United States. In an interview, he characterized the island as
“absolutely essential”for the defense of the United States.
Recently, Trump has also stated his readiness to “take action” even without the consent of Greenland's inhabitants to prevent Russia or China from influencing the region.
It should be noted that Canada fears it may become the next “target” for Trump after his operation in Venezuela and threats regarding Greenland. Trump repeats his statements about a deal with Greenland, noting that if achieving this “the easy way” fails, then it will have to be “done the hard way”.
The situation surrounding Greenland and the United States' attempts to strengthen its position in the Arctic raises concerns not only in Denmark but also in neighboring countries. Increased US activity in this region could affect the geopolitical balance, taking into account the interests of Russia and China, which are also seeking to expand their influence in the Arctic. It is important to see how international partners will respond to these initiatives and what consequences they may have for stability in the region.
