Trump declares war on drug cartels on land: What this means for Mexico.
According to ТСН: The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has announced a new phase in the fight against drug cartels, which will now be extended to land. He emphasized that drug cartels actually control Mexico.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump noted that the U.S. will strengthen its efforts against the cartels on land.
"We have intercepted 97% of the drugs that come by sea, and now we are beginning to take action against the cartels on land," said the President of the United States.
"The cartels actually control Mexico. It is very sad to see what has happened to this country, but the cartels rule there and kill between 250,000 and 300,000 people in our country every year," added the Chief of the White House.
Trump's threats against Mexico
It is noteworthy that Trump considered a military intervention in Mexico following the arrest of the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, and emphasized that it is not the government but the drug cartels that control the situation. He pointed out that President Claudia Sheinbaum rejects offers for U.S. military aid, but the U.S. "needs to do something" in light of the hundreds of thousands of drug-related deaths. Despite record seizures of fentanyl by the Mexican government, Trump considers the situation critical and compares drug cartels to a major threat that requires active action.
Sheinbaum firmly rejected the possibility of American intervention, calling Trump's threats "unserious." She emphasized that Mexico is a free and sovereign country, where "the people rule" and not external forces. The politician confirmed the willingness to cooperate on security issues but rejected any subordination to Washington.
The situation surrounding the drug cartels remains tense and has serious consequences not only for Mexico but also for the U.S. The intensification of American measures could have political and social ramifications in both countries, while simultaneously raising public awareness of the seriousness of the drug problem. At the same time, the position of the Mexican government reflects the desire to maintain sovereignty in solving internal problems, which is also an important aspect in the relations between the two countries.
