Belarus Frees Political Detainees

According to Novyny.live: Donald Trump has announced that 250 political prisoners have been released in Belarus, following negotiations between his special envoy, John Coale, and President Alexander Lukashenko. This development is part of a broader trend: since May of last year, the total number of released individuals has exceeded 500. Trump expressed gratitude to Lukashenko for carrying out the release.

The discussions between John Coale and Lukashenko took place inside Belarus, underscoring the active diplomatic engagement of the United States in the region. Trump, who met with Lukashenko in Alaska in August 2025, also intends to hold a face-to-face meeting with the Belarusian leader at the next session of the Peace Council. He stated:

'I would like to express my deepest thanks to President (Alexander Lukashenko) for doing this. And I want to meet with him at the next Peace Council meeting.'

In September 2025, Trump had already decided to lift sanctions against a Belarusian airline. These steps indicate a shift in the Trump administration’s approach toward Belarus and a possible intention to forge closer ties between the two nations.

Outlook for Bilateral Cooperation

The release of political prisoners in Belarus may be seen as a move to ease tensions between Minsk and Washington. At the same time, Trump’s policy shift toward Belarus could reflect Washington’s desire to explore new diplomatic solutions in the region, particularly amid the broader geopolitical landscape. Meetings between the two countries’ leaders might open up fresh avenues for collaboration, but they also raise concerns about human rights and democratic processes in Belarus.
