Trump stated his intention to buy Greenland: what is known about the deal.
According to ТСН: U.S. President Donald Trump expressed several thoughts about Greenland, stating his intention to make a deal.
“This (the deal – ed.) is easier. But one way or another, Greenland will stay with us,” he assured.
Trump emphasized that it is “about acquisition, not leasing or short-term ownership.”
“We are talking about acquisition. And if we don’t do it, Russia or China will. And I won’t let that happen,” he noted.
The president also raised the issue of influence on the North Atlantic Alliance.
“If that affects NATO, then it affects NATO, but you know they need us much more than we need them. I’ll tell you that right now,” the American leader remarked.
He also highlighted that he “likes NATO.”
“I just wonder if, if we needed NATO, would they be there for us? I’m not sure they would. You know, we spend a lot of money on NATO, and I’m not sure they would,” the president concluded.
Furthermore, earlier reports indicated that the United Kingdom is negotiating the possible deployment of NATO forces in Greenland.
“Downing Street is in talks with European allies about deploying military forces in Greenland to guard the Arctic from U.S. President Donald Trump,” reports The Telegraph.
Trump's statements underline his strategic approach to the Arctic region, which is becoming increasingly important in the context of global politics. The growing interest of states in this territory, including the United Kingdom, indicates rising competitiveness in the Arctic space and potential security challenges in the region.
