Gym equipment can harbor more bacteria than toilets: study.
According to a FitRated study, gyms contain more bacteria than restrooms. Exercise bikes harbor 362 times more bacteria than toilet seats. Stationary bikes have 39 times more bacteria than reusable cafeteria trays. Treadmills also contain more bacteria than the faucet in a public restroom.
This study highlights the importance of proper cleaning of gym equipment before and after use, as shared usage promotes the proliferation of bacteria. Two groups of dangerous bacteria were found on the equipment - gram-positive cocci and gram-negative rods. The former can cause skin infections, while the latter are associated with serious infections that are difficult to treat.
Experts recommend simple hygiene measures such as disinfecting equipment before and after use, washing hands, and changing clothes after workouts to reduce the risk of infection.
