Nigerian striker Christantus Uche, 22, signed with Crystal Palace on the last day of the transfer window, after a season at Spanish club Getafe.
In his Instagram post, he wrote:
“When I first arrived at Getafe, I was full of ambitions, dreams, and a desire to truly make an impact.”
He went on to note that he “did not come close to meeting expectations” and added that he grew and learned, discovering the true meaning of the word 'family', before thanking Getafe:
“From the bottom of my heart.”
However, it soon became clear that his message coincided with a post from Fabio Silva, made a few days earlier, with only the names changed.
The Portuguese Silva, 23, moved from Wolverhampton after five years to the German club Borussia Dortmund. He also wrote that he “did not come close to meeting expectations” and expressed gratitude to his old team using the same words as Uche, concluding his message:
“Now it's time for a new chapter, but I will never forget where I was. I will always be another fan of this club. Thank you @wolves. From the bottom of my heart.”
Fans labeled the situation “PratGBT”. One joked:
“AI, please write me a farewell message.”
Another noted:
“It’s like being caught cheating on homework from a friend.”
One Wolverhampton fan added about Silva:
“This is really disgusting, the guy can't even write a farewell message for a club where he was for 4/5 years.”
The similar situation with the farewell messages highlighted how important it is for athletes to be sensitive to their fans. In a world where every step of a public figure becomes a topic of discussion, fans expect personal and sincere gestures. This could be an important lesson for footballers in their communication with supporters in the future.
Moreover, this incident emphasizes the role of social media in modern football. Every post, every word can quickly become a talking point, and footballers should carefully consider how they word their addresses to fans to avoid misunderstandings and criticism.
