European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson is calling for intensified assistance to Ukraine in the energy sector to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe.

To avoid a humanitarian catastrophe in Ukraine, we need to now intensify unprecedented efforts in logistics and assistance. I call for action in six directions (related to energy - ed.)

According to Simson, it is primarily necessary to repair and launch damaged electricity and heat production facilities. It is also necessary to deliver more small decentralized generators to Ukraine that can quickly become operational. Deploying rooftop solar photovoltaic systems is needed as soon as possible to provide energy to hospitals, schools, public, and residential buildings. In addition, the volume of electricity that can be exported to Ukraine from other European countries needs to be gradually increased. It is also important to expand the capacity of border connections and strengthen the protection of energy infrastructure and air defense around critical facilities.

Simson called on all those who can help Ukraine to do so before the cold sets in. She also emphasized that Ukraine needs unprecedented efforts of solidarity and generosity, and the European Commission is ready to help provide support. Ukraine should not be left alone during the hardest winter.
