600 Veterans Prove Life After Injury Is Possible at Lviv’s Unbroken Games 2026.
Unbroken Games 2026: A Veteran Competition in Lviv
According to UATV: Lviv hosted the national Unbroken Games 2026, a three-day competition bringing together around 600 participants—including active military personnel, veterans, and people with disabilities. The event aimed to showcase that returning to an active life after severe injuries is achievable.
Among the competitors were individuals with powerful stories. One of them is Oleksandr Bazylevych, who was wounded in September 2023. Despite having both legs and his left arm amputated, he remains deeply involved in sports. He explained:
“First, for me, this is a less traumatic sport. Second, it demands intense concentration—you always have to focus on the ball. There’s a lot of movement, tactics, and strategies. You constantly have to think.” — Oleksandr Bazylevych
Another participant, Vyacheslav Kaistro, was injured in 2023 after stepping on a landmine. He emphasized the importance of camaraderie and connection within the veteran community, stating:
“These competitions are really about bonding in the veteran community. It’s like a family, you know? It’s not even about sports. I respect every guy and girl here and consider them a brother or sister.” — Vyacheslav Kaistro
International Dimension of the Games
The Unbroken Games have taken on an international scope, with competitors arriving from Croatia, Denmark, and the United Kingdom. Serhiy Doronin, one of the organizers, remarked: 'I am very glad that after four years of war, veteran sports and veteran policy have developed so strongly in our country. Every veteran knows that society supports and accepts them, and I can say that a lot is being done for them. So I would advise all veterans to get involved in sports whenever possible and actively participate in competitions.'
This event has become a landmark for Ukrainian veterans, highlighting their resilience and determination to lead active lives despite the trauma they have endured.
Unbroken Games 2026 underscored not only athletic achievements but also the social importance of supporting veterans as they reintegrate into active life. The presence of international teams reflects the growing popularity of veteran sports and its role in a society striving for meaningful veteran integration. These competitions foster teamwork and communication among veterans—key elements in their psychological recovery after war.
