Terrible cyclone in Mozambique took the lives of 94 people
The number of dead from the powerful cyclone Idai in Mozambique rose to 94. This was reported by the national disaster management agency, writes DW.
The storm, which struck the country a week ago, caused significant damage, especially in the Cabo Delgado province.
It is noted that the cyclone, with wind gusts of up to 260 km/h and record precipitation of 250 mm in a day, brought disaster to 620 thousand people. The hardest hit were the residents of the northern Cabo Delgado province, where more than 500 thousand people are reported to be affected.
Experts link the strength of the cyclone to climate change, which intensifies such phenomena.
It should be noted that as a result of cyclone Idai, which hit the French overseas department of Mayotte in the Indian Ocean the day before, several hundred people may have died. This was stated by the prefect of Mayotte, François-Xavier Bellil.
Also, the storm named 'Dana' passed through Spain on October 29. Within a few hours, two years' worth of rainfall fell in several provinces. Hundreds of people found themselves trapped in offices and shopping centers. Some had to escape from the rising waters by climbing onto rooftops and light poles. The death toll from the floods in Spain is 217 people.
In addition, a powerful storm hit the northwest of the USA, bringing strong winds and heavy rain. As a result of the bad weather, about half a million homes were left without electricity, and numerous fallen trees led to one person's death.
