Poland Updates Rules for Found Money and Items: New Reporting Thresholds Announced.
Revised Regulations on Claiming Found Cash and Belongings
According to Novyny.live: Poland has introduced updated regulations regarding the retention of discovered money and lost property. Effective May 19, 2023, these new rules outline clear obligations for anyone who finds someone else's belongings. Specifically, the threshold requiring individuals to report a find is set at 240.30 zloty—roughly equivalent to 2,900 Ukrainian hryvnia. For context, this change is part of broader efforts to standardize property laws in Poland, which affect both residents and visitors.
A key development is that this reporting threshold is now linked to Poland's minimum wage projected for 2026. This marks a shift in how found items and cash are handled, as previous guidelines were often less precise. The timeframe to locate the original owner has also been shortened to one year, placing greater responsibility on the finder.
Rules for Found Cash
Under the new provisions, ownership of discovered cash transfers to the finder after six months, provided the owner does not reclaim it. This regulation applies to items such as:
- keys
- phones
- bags
- backpacks
These changes aim to simplify the process of claiming finds and encourage citizens to report what they discover.
The legislative updates in Poland concerning the ownership of found property are designed not only to streamline procedures but also to enhance public accountability for lost items. By tying the reporting threshold to the minimum wage, the rules may influence how often people report finds, as the process becomes more straightforward. These adjustments could also boost public awareness of rights and responsibilities in such situations, fostering stronger social trust within the community.
