Ukraine Aims to Become a Logistics Hub: What This Means for Air Freight.
Ukraine's Potential as a Logistics Hub
According to ЦТС — Транспорт: Ukraine is being considered a promising logistics hub amid shifts in international transport, particularly air freight, that have occurred since the war began. Positioned between Europe and Asia, the country holds certain geographic advantages that could boost its aviation sector. Industry representatives note that while air transport carries less than one percent of global cargo volume, it accounts for about a third of the total value of worldwide shipments.
Growth of Air Freight in Ukraine
Supernova Airlines, part of the Nova group, is expanding its services. In the fall of 2021, it announced the creation of its own aviation division. Currently, Supernova Airlines operates six flights per week between Belgium, the Czech Republic, and Israel. Volodymyr Popereshnyuk also plans to establish an air fleet for 'Nova Poshta,' reflecting increasing interest in developing air cargo capabilities in Ukraine.
In 2025, annual demand for air freight rose by 3.4% compared to 2024. Projections indicate a further 2.4% increase in 2026. These figures point to a gradual recovery and growing global interest in aviation transport, despite challenging conditions. Global spot airfreight rates in May 2026 were 41% higher than the same month the previous year, signaling rising service costs.
'When we talk about the future of Ukrainian aviation, we are also talking about the future of the economy.' - Veronika Komakha, Supernova Airlines representative
She also emphasized that 'Ukraine has its advantages, primarily its geographic location,' but noted that 'without the right conditions, even the best location will not ensure our competitiveness.' This highlights the need to improve infrastructure and create favorable conditions for logistics development in the country.
Overall, Ukraine has every chance to become a major player in the international air freight market. However, realizing this potential requires focusing on infrastructure development and the competitiveness of aviation services. With demand for air cargo on the rise, Ukraine must actively work to enhance its logistics capabilities to capitalize on these global market shifts.
