According to ТСН: A possible world record has been recorded in the coastal waters of Northern California. 26-year-old Brendan Walsh caught an orange rockfish (Canary rockfish) weighing over 4.6 kilograms, exceeding the records that have stood for many years.

Fishing in Mendocino County began as a regular outing. Brendan Walsh and his father planned to return to port due to the weather and the cold rain. However, at the last moment, they decided to check one of the deep water spots near Albion. It was there that the specimen, which the fisherman characterized as an 'incredible coincidence,' was hooked.

Weight and Size of the Catch

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), this type of fish typically weighs about 1.4 kg, and rare specimens reach 4.5 kg. Walsh's catch officially weighed 4.65 kg (10.25 pounds).

  • Length of the fish: 68 centimeters.

  • Previous state record: 4.08 kg (set in November of last year).

  • Current world record: 4.53 kg (recorded by IGFA in 1986).

Verification of the Record

The record verification process has already begun. Representatives from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife inspected the catch and signed the necessary documents. An application has also been submitted to the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) in Florida to update the world ranking.

According to Walsh, the success was the result of a combination of experience and luck, as fish of this type in these waters are usually much smaller and more depleted.

Celebrating the Record

While the bureaucratic processes are handling the record application, the fisherman's family has already celebrated this event. Brendan's mother prepared the giant rockfish for dinner, frying it in butter with garlic. The fisherman noted that the taste of the potential 'champion' turned out to be excellent.

It should be noted that previously in Poland, fishermen set a new world record by catching a giant catfish measuring 2 meters 92 centimeters.

Thus, Brendan Walsh's catch could become a significant milestone in the history of fishing, emphasizing that true success requires not only skill but also an element of chance. Importantly, this record not only brings pride to the fisherman but also draws attention to the richness of California's marine fauna.
