Russia launched a ballistic missile near NATO border: US warned about escalation.
According to ТСН: At the time when the administration of US President Donald Trump is working on peace negotiations, Russia is conducting a "dangerous and unclear escalation" of the war in Ukraine, which has lasted almost four years.
This was stated by the US Deputy Ambassador to the UN, Tammi Bruce, during an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.
She noted that recently Russia launched the "Oreshnik" ballistic missile, capable of carrying nuclear weapons, near the border with Poland, a NATO ally.
"At a moment of huge potential, driven only by the unprecedented commitment of President Trump to peace worldwide, both sides must seek ways to de-escalate. However, Russia's actions risk expanding and intensifying the war," said Tammi Bruce.
Bruce also reminded that almost a year ago, Russia supported a Security Council resolution calling for an end to the war in Ukraine.
"It would be good if Russia confirmed its words with actions. In the spirit of this resolution, Russia, Ukraine, and Europe must seriously strive for peace and end this nightmare," said the American diplomat.
She added that the US expresses regret over the large number of casualties in the war and condemns the intensification of Russia's attacks on Ukraine's energy and other infrastructure.
The AP agency reported that the Russian attack with the "Oreshnik" occurred shortly after Kyiv and its allies announced substantial progress in reaching an agreement that could protect Ukraine from further Russian aggression in the event of a peace deal brokered by the US.
European leaders also condemned the launch of the ballistic missile, calling it an "escalation and unacceptable".
It should be noted that on January 8, Russia first struck Lviv with the "Oreshnik". The missile was moving on a ballistic trajectory at a speed of about 13 thousand km/h. A series of explosions in the city occurred just minutes after a massive air raid alert was announced.
The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that the strike with the "Oreshnik" was a response to an alleged "attack" by a Ukrainian drone on dictator Vladimir Putin's residence in Valdai on the night of December 29. However, the Institute for the Study of War points out that the CIA did not record attempts to strike the residence.
After the attack, the Ukrainian Security Service displayed the remnants of the ballistic missile. Among the found parts was a stabilization and guidance block - essentially the "brains" of the missile. Investigators classify the use of this weapon against civilian infrastructure as a war crime.
This news indicates the continuation of Russian aggression against Ukraine amid international efforts for a peaceful resolution. Moscow's actions, particularly the launch of missiles near the border with NATO countries, are raising concern within the global community. Tension in the region is rising as diplomats from both sides try to find a path to stability and peace.
