WP revealed why Putin "quietly" supports Trump.
Russia presents itself as indifferent to the US elections, but in fact hopes for Donald Trump's victory, as this may give it the opportunity to end the war with Ukraine on favorable terms.
According to the "Khvilya" publication, the Washington Post newspaper published an article stating that the elections in the US are taking place at a critical moment when Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky are facing pressure due to the prolonged Russian war against Ukraine.
The article notes that although there is hope that Trump can end the war in Ukraine, his plans may be unacceptable to Putin.
However, an unnamed Russian official noted that US-Russian relations have reached an impasse, and all of them are hostages to the situation, even Putin himself.
Trump has repeatedly stated his good relations with Putin and has tried to use this to end the war in Ukraine.
According to the publication, few people in Moscow believe that Trump can completely change the relations, especially after little has changed during his first term.
"Of course, they want Trump, that's clear. But the result of these elections will not change the rules of the game for Russia. The situation has become really terrible. US-Russian relations have reached a deadlock. And everyone is a hostage of this - even Putin," said a former Kremlin official who still works in government circles and spoke on the condition of anonymity.
According to the Russian elite, if Trump wins, then there will be a chance to end the war with Ukraine on Moscow's terms and redraw the global security map.
Political analyst Sergey Markov, associated with the Kremlin, expressed hope that Trump will call Putin and Zelensky after November 7 and propose to stop the military actions.
The newspaper also noted that Trump's victory could be a risk for Russia, as misunderstandings between them could lead to hostility, and although a window of opportunity might appear, it will be very narrow and fragile.
These plans are no longer disclosed, however, Orbana.
