UEFA allows clubs to replace injured players: which stars will get a chance

According to The Sun: UEFA management has decided to make significant changes to the rules concerning injured players, which could positively affect footballers who currently remain on the bench in the Premier League.

When nine Premier League clubs confirmed their squads for the initial stage of three UEFA tournaments, there were concerns about significant absences of players.

Tottenham did not include young French player Massis Tell in their squad, Liverpool left out Italian Federico Chiesa, and Arsenal could not find a place for Gabriel Jesus. Loanee Facundo Buonnotte also missed out on Chelsea's squad.

This means that all these footballers will not be able to participate in the Champions League until the knockout phase in the spring.

New Rule

However, the situation could change. UEFA announced that it has approved changes to the regulations for three club competitions.

According to the new rules, which take effect immediately, clubs can temporarily replace one outfield player with “serious injuries or illnesses” until the sixth match of the tournament in December, when the initial phase of the Conference League concludes.

UEFA stated: “The main objective of the changes is to avoid unfair squad reductions and to protect players from excessive workloads.”

Liam DeLappe's injury for ten weeks opens up opportunities for Facundo Buonnotte in Chelsea's lineup, as well as chances for Tell, Chiesa, and Jesus.

Tell admitted during his return to the youth national team of France last week that his absence is “certainly painful.” He promised to prove his worth to coach Thomas Frank on the pitch.

Now Tell has a new opportunity if Tottenham faces striker injuries in the coming months.

Champions League Final 2027

Also during the meeting in the Albanian capital Tirana, it was confirmed that the Champions League final of 2027 will take place at the “Metropolitano” stadium in Madrid — the third time in eight years.

The only other candidate was Baku, which failed in the contests even before the voting, and Spanish officials were confident in their success with tickets for the final since April.

However, this decision appears to be a deliberate signal to Real Madrid, which invested heavily in renovating the “Santiago Bernabeu” stadium and remains in the minority in attempts to break UEFA's dominance in club football.

UEFA management also discussed proposals from La Liga and Serie A heads regarding allowing matches to be played outside their countries.

La Liga aims to hold Girona's home match against Barcelona in Miami before Christmas, while the clash between AC Milan and Como is planned in Perth in February.

FIFA's decision to halt its legal actions against American sports promoters, who became official marketing partners of UEFA, has opened up new opportunities.

However, UEFA President Alexander Ceferin expressed his concerns last week.

“The committee recognized this as an important and growing issue but expressed a desire to ensure it has the views of all stakeholders before making a final decision.”

“There are many issues to be resolved, and as the European governing body, UEFA has the responsibility to consider all such factors.”

“As a result, no decision was made today, but UEFA will conduct a round of consultations with all participants in European football – including fans.”
Thus, UEFA's rule changes are changing the game for clubs and players, providing injured footballers with new opportunities to return to the field. These changes may significantly impact team strategies in the upcoming matches. Additionally, the decision to hold the Champions League final in Madrid underscores UEFA's efforts to maintain European football at a high level.
