Hungary Stands Alone in Blocking Ukraine's EU Membership Bid.
Political Motives Drive Hungary's Stance on Ukraine's EU Accession
According to Novyny.live: Hungary is the sole nation obstructing Ukraine's path to European Union membership, a position driven by political considerations. This was confirmed by Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Georgiy Tykhy during a briefing on February 18. His statement follows Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's recent declaration that his country would not support Ukraine's membership for the next century. This ongoing dispute highlights a significant rift within the EU regarding its future expansion.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has expressed confidence that Hungary's plan to block Ukraine's accession is ultimately doomed to fail. According to Georgiy Tykhy, the process is currently stalled solely because of Hungary and lacks any substantive justification.
"Ukraine deserves to see its EU accession process move forward," stated Georgiy Tykhy.
Strained Relations Between Ukraine and Hungary
Tensions were further exposed at the Munich Security Conference, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed Orbán directly with a pointed remark.
"It's time for Orbán to build up his army, not his belly," said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.Consequently, Hungary's obstruction continues to be a major point of contention in bilateral relations, generating significant frustration and concern in Kyiv.
The impasse over EU membership underscores the complex political dynamics between Ukraine and Hungary, which have broader implications for regional stability. Hungary's actions could also impact wider European policy, as supporting Ukraine's EU bid is widely seen as a crucial step for strengthening European integration and continental security. Ukraine remains hopeful that other EU member states will continue to support its aspirations.
