Ukraine’s Growing Reliance on Imports

According to Novyny.live: Economist Oleksiy Kushch has highlighted a troubling trend: Ukraine’s economy is becoming increasingly dependent on imports, with a widening trade deficit and mounting risks for the hryvnia, despite the National Bank’s reserves. He warns that the value of imported goods and services now exceeds export earnings, signaling a major threat to the country’s economic stability. This shift is especially concerning for a nation that has long relied on its agricultural and industrial output.

Kushch projects the trade deficit will reach $60 billion, pointing to deep-rooted problems in the agricultural sector and the broader economy. He emphasized that

“we are turning into an import-dependent economy, without our own real production sector.”
This trajectory could deepen reliance on foreign goods and external financing, which in turn creates additional pressure on the hryvnia.

Hryvnia Risks and the IMF’s Role

The economist also warned that

“the hryvnia will experience gradual devaluation under an artificially managed exchange rate.”
In other words, as import dependency grows and the trade deficit widens, foreign currency reserves may prove insufficient to stabilize the national currency.

Meanwhile, a mission from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has begun work in Kyiv to review Ukraine’s extended financing program. While this engagement could help improve the economic outlook, Kushch cautions that the risks tied to import reliance remain a serious challenge for the state.

Given these circumstances, Ukraine’s economy faces urgent questions that must be addressed to prevent further harm to economic stability and the hryvnia. The situation underscores the critical need to boost domestic production and reduce dependence on external sources—a key step toward ensuring long-term economic resilience for Ukraine.
