What Ukrainians Need to Know About ETIAS

According to Novyny.live: Starting in the final quarter of 2026, Ukrainian citizens will need to obtain a paid travel authorization under the new ETIAS system before visiting most European Union countries. This initiative aims to streamline border procedures for non-EU nationals, including Ukrainians planning short-term trips, while enhancing overall security.

The ETIAS system is scheduled to go live between October and December 2026. Applicants will be required to pay a non-refundable fee of €20 (approximately 1,000 Ukrainian hryvnias) to complete the registration. Once granted, the authorization remains valid for three years or until the traveler’s passport expires, whichever comes first. This permit covers various short-stay purposes, such as:

  • tourism
  • business meetings
  • visiting relatives
  • short-term educational programs

How the ETIAS Application Process Works

Standard processing of an ETIAS application can take up to 96 hours, though in certain cases it may be extended to 30 days. It is crucial to understand that holding an ETIAS authorization does not automatically guarantee entry into the EU; final approval rests with border control officers at the point of entry. Consequently, Ukrainians planning trips to EU member states should prepare for these new requirements and factor in potential delays.

Given the rising trend of short-term travel among Ukrainians, ETIAS could become a convenient tool for trip planning. However, travelers must account for the new rules and possible processing delays, which may influence route choices and travel schedules for Ukrainian tourists in the future.
