Tax-free pension in Poland: who will lose benefits in 2025.
A tax-free pension is a benefit for people with low incomes, allowing them to receive payments without paying income tax. It has been in effect in Poland since 2022 and applies to millions of residents of the country, including Ukrainians who are entitled to pension provision.
What is this benefit? What conditions must be met to avoid paying tax on a pension? An informational portal 'inPoland' will provide all the answers.
Who can benefit from the exemption
To receive a tax-free pension, one must have a monthly income not exceeding 2,500 zlotys gross. This applies to both old-age pensions and disability benefits. Even if a pensioner receives multiple types of income, their total amount must not exceed 2,500 zlotys.
The tax exemption is granted automatically, without the need to submit an application. However, it is important to remember that 9% of the gross pension goes to medical contributions, even if there is no tax to pay.
Why in 2025 some pensioners lost the exemption
In 2025, pensions in Poland were indexed by 5.5%. For some, this worsened the situation—their incomes exceeded the established limit, and they lost the right to the tax exemption. In this case, the standard tax rate of 12% is applied, which, of course, reduces the payout amount.
Even the 'thirteenth pension' is subject to taxation and does not have tax immunity. It is important to remember that the maximum annual tax-free income in 2025 is 30,000 zlotys.
Therefore, specialists recommend those who are nearing this level to consult the appropriate services to avoid unpleasant surprises in the form of additional taxes.
Ukrainians in Poland, like citizens of other countries, have the opportunity to benefit from the tax-free pension provided that the established conditions are met. However, the indexing of pensions in 2025 led to the loss of this benefit for some individuals due to exceeding the tax payment limit. It is important to be cautious with your income to avoid unforeseen financial difficulties.
