Ukraine Needs Another $2 Billion for Gas: Why There Are Not Enough Funds Even with Full Storage.
According to inkorr.com: According to a report by Reuters, Ukraine needs an additional 1-2 billion dollars to purchase 1-2 billion cubic meters of gas in Europe. Although gas storage is already filled to 80-90% of maximum capacity, additional purchases abroad are required for its complete filling, which will demand expenditures of 0.5-1 billion dollars.
Problems with Extraction and Gas Import
Due to the reduction in gas extraction volumes last autumn, caused by Russian attacks, experts recommend accumulating up to 14 billion cubic meters before the start of the heating season. In the context of aggression from Russia, importing gas becomes a much safer option than storing it in Ukraine, despite having the largest gas storage facilities in Europe. There is also an increase in supplies through Hungary and Poland, and the capacity of the gas pipeline is expected to double by the beginning of 2026.
Searching for New Funding Sources
Despite the high filling of gas storage, Ukraine is actively looking for additional financial resources for gas purchases before winter. The geopolitical situation serves as an impetus for increasing imports and diversifying sources of gas supply.
Thus, ensuring the country has the necessary gas volumes becomes an extremely important lever in the context of the upcoming heating season. The search for new financial sources and increased imports are strategically important steps for the stability of Ukraine's energy sector in the face of growing challenges.
