Ukrainians in the USA have lost food assistance: what happened to the SNAP program.
Ukrainians in the USA are losing food assistance
According to inkorr.com: About 300 thousand Ukrainians currently in the USA under temporary protection status due to the events of 2022 will no longer be able to receive food assistance under the SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) program starting November 1.
Yuriy Boyechko, the CEO of the non-governmental organization Hope For Ukraine, noted in Adam Klasfeld's podcast that Ukrainians have started receiving notifications about the denial of benefits due to their immigration status, even though they are legally in the country.
'This has come as a real shock for our office and the community', he emphasized.
These changes occurred as a result of the Big Beautiful Bill concerning taxation and social spending. According to Boyechko, this law has adversely affected the most vulnerable segments of the population. For instance, a family with six children receiving a low salary could lose on average 1000 dollars per month for food, creating a risk of food crisis among Ukrainian refugees.
Despite the fact that according to the Congressional Budget Office, the reduction in spending on this program has a negligible effect on the overall federal budget, for individual families it can have catastrophic consequences.
Boyechko urged the public to pay attention to this issue and expressed hope that there will be politicians in the Senate willing to recognize the consequences of this decision.
'Even with small spending of the program, their reduction can seriously harm communities in the future', he noted.
Thus, Ukrainians in the USA have lost the ability to receive food assistance, and new laws have effectively deprived them of this vital support. Changes in legislation could lead to serious problems for Ukrainian refugees, while the consequences for the federal budget will remain negligible.
This situation highlights the importance of supporting the Ukrainian community in the USA, as in times of economic instability, it is especially crucial to ensure basic needs such as food. The loss of food assistance may force many Ukrainians to seek new ways to survive or even leave the country, further increasing their challenge in the new reality.
