Military Analyst Weighs In

According to TSN.ua: Military expert Ivan Stupak has suggested that Ukrainian drones may have slipped past Russia's air defense systems by flying through Belarusian airspace near the town of Kastsyukovichy. This route, he argues, could have enabled them to strike the port of Primorsk in Leningrad Oblast—a facility that handles up to 90% of Russia's oil product exports. According to Stupak,

“this zone is considered the territory of the Republic of Belarus,”
highlighting the potential use of this corridor.

Belarus's Soviet-era air defense systems are reportedly ineffective against low-flying targets, which may explain how the Ukrainian drones successfully completed their mission. The expert noted that

“Belarusian air defense only reacts after the fact,”
making it poorly suited to intercepting drone attacks.

Ukraine Intensifies Operations

It is worth noting that Ukrainian drones have previously struck the Kirishi oil refinery in Leningrad Oblast. Additionally, recent reports indicate damage to production facilities at Novatek, and a massive fire broke out at the Slavneft-YANOS refinery in Yaroslavl. These incidents point to an escalation in Ukrainian operations in response to Russian aggression.

This situation underscores the complexity of military operations in the region and the potential for Ukrainian forces to employ new tactics. Attacks on strategic assets like oil refineries could undermine Russia's economic capabilities and heighten regional tensions. At the same time, they highlight the ongoing technological and tactical advancements being made by both sides in the conflict.
