Russia's Military Footprint in Occupied Crimea

According to UATV: Russia maintains a substantial military presence in occupied Crimea, with over 200 military installations located on the peninsula. Occupied for the past 12 years, Crimea serves as a critical base for Russian armed forces, hosting advanced air defense systems like the S-400 and S-500 which cover large areas of the Black Sea. However, Ukrainian forces are actively working to degrade this strategic advantage.

Operations by Ukrainian Forces

On February 25, 2024, Ukraine's Special Operations Forces successfully destroyed a launcher, a radar station, and components of an S-400 system, with the total damage estimated at one billion dollars. This strike was part of broader Ukrainian efforts to reduce Russia's military footprint in the region. Earlier that same month, Ukrainian forces also destroyed two Russian Project 22460 'Okhotnik' border patrol ships and two Be-12 aircraft, demonstrating their continued operational tempo.

These efforts continued into August 2024, when Ukrainian MAGURA V5 sea drones sank a Russian KS-701 'Tunets' project boat. This operation was followed by the destruction of a gas platform in the Black Sea, which was occupied by up to 40 personnel at the time of the attack. These actions highlight the growing proficiency of Ukrainian forces in deploying advanced asymmetric technologies.

Ukraine unveiled its series of MAGURA strike sea drones in May 2025. Over two years of combat, these drones have engaged 17 Russian maritime and aerial targets, with 15 confirmed as completely destroyed. This success underscores Ukraine's commitment to modernizing its military capabilities and enhancing their effectiveness against the Russian aggressor. The use of domestically developed naval drones has become a hallmark of Ukraine's strategy in the Black Sea.

Commenting on the situation, Paul Johnson noted: 'I leave it to the Ukrainians to define what victory is. If they want to reclaim all Ukrainian territory, including Crimea, we support them in that.'

Thus, Ukrainian forces persist in their active campaign to erode Russia's military potential in Crimea, inflicting significant losses on the occupiers and bolstering their own defensive posture in the region.

These events point to an intensification of Ukrainian military action in the fight against Russian aggression, specifically in the context of degrading the occupiers' capabilities in Crimea. Support from the international community, including public statements from Western leaders, remains a crucial factor in Ukraine's ongoing efforts to regain control over its sovereign territories.
