NATO Must Rethink Strategy as Ukrainian Forces 'Destroy' 17 Armored Units in Drone-Focused Exercise.
NATO Exercises Held in Estonia
According to UATV: During a 2025 NATO exercise in Estonia, Ukrainian military personnel, acting in an opposing force role, demonstrated the potent effectiveness of drone warfare and the 'Delta' situational awareness system. Their simulated actions resulted in the neutralization of 17 armored vehicles in just half a day, a stark indicator that NATO's conventional tactical doctrines require urgent reassessment for modern combat.
Multinational Military Participation
The 'Hedgehog' exercise assembled over 16,000 service members from 12 NATO member states. Participants, including units from a British brigade and an Estonian division within a multinational battlegroup, observed the advanced technological tactics employed by the Ukrainian forces firsthand. This provided a direct, practical lesson in the evolving nature of warfare.
Military expert Andriy Kovalenko commented on the situation, stating: 'This is no surprise. NATO is still operating within the paradigm of tank columns and armored vehicles, which are no longer employed as they once were in contemporary warfare. They fundamentally do not grasp the nature of drone warfare and assault group tactics.'
This statement underscores a fundamental shift in combat paradigms and the critical need for strategic adaptation to achieve success on today's battlefield.
Consequently, the outcomes of the Estonian exercises signal that NATO must account for emerging challenges linked to drone use and novel technologies, revising its combat doctrines for the conditions of modern war. These drills highlight the imperative for military strategies to adapt to new technological realities shaping current conflicts. Given the growing centrality of drones in combat, NATO must seriously reconsider its traditional approaches to remain effective in a rapidly changing warfighting environment. This also points to the necessity of training military personnel in new technologies and combat methodologies.
