Nearly 250 Square Kilometers Retaken by Ukrainian Forces in May; Russia Imposes Shell Quotas.
Assessing Russia's Offensive Campaign Performance
According to UATV: An evaluation of Russia's offensive operations reveals significant losses of previously held ground, alongside effective countermeasures by Ukraine's military, which reclaimed close to 250 square kilometers of territory during May. These developments highlight a decline in the Russian military's ability to maintain control over temporarily occupied areas.
Shifts on the Battlefield
By June, the Russian army had introduced restrictions on ammunition usage for its artillery units. According to Vladyslav Voloshyn,
“the Russian army set limits on the use of ammunition for its artillery units in June”. These constraints were triggered by strikes from the Armed Forces of Ukraine on Russian depots situated in the temporarily occupied regions of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson.
These shifts in the operational landscape indicate mounting pressure on Russian troops from Ukrainian forces, a factor that could shape the conflict's trajectory moving forward.
The front-line situation remains tense, and current events hold the potential to substantially alter the course of the war. Diminished ammunition reserves among Russian forces may weaken their combat effectiveness, opening up fresh opportunities for Ukraine. This underscores the critical need for continued international support to help Ukraine restore its territorial integrity.
