Civilian Awarded for the First Time: Ukrainian Rescuer Killed in UN Helicopter Attack in South Sudan.
Serhiy Prykhodko’s Tragic Death
According to Espreso.tv: On March 7, 2025, Serhiy Prykhodko, a flight attendant and rescuer working for the company 'Ukrainian Helicopters,' lost his life during an armed assault on a UN evacuation helicopter in South Sudan. He demonstrated extraordinary bravery by shielding passengers who were boarding the aircraft. Despite the attack, the rescue operation was successfully completed, and the helicopter managed to land safely.
A Historic Medal for Valor
In recognition of his courage, Prykhodko was posthumously awarded the Captain Mbaye Diagne Medal. This marks the first time in history that a civilian has received this honor. Established by the UN Security Council in 2014, the medal had previously been awarded only three times.
“No one should die while serving the cause of peace. Attacks on peacekeepers are grave violations of international humanitarian law, and member states must fulfill their obligations to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel under all circumstances.”
António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General
The death of Serhiy Prykhodko underscores the extreme dangers that peacekeepers face while carrying out their duties. This incident highlights the urgent need for stronger security measures to protect UN personnel in conflict zones where life-threatening risks are ever-present. The medal awarded to Prykhodko not only honors his memory but also draws attention to the critical role civilians play in supporting international peace and security.
