Ukrainian Railways will transition to European standards: what will change

According to inkorr.com: The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has adopted a draft law concerning the safety and interoperability of railway transport. It was developed by the Ministry of Communities and Territories Development. The main goal of this document is to adapt Ukrainian railways to European standards and legislation.

'Its aim is to enhance traffic safety, ensure technical compatibility with the European system, and integrate Ukrainian railway transport into a single European space,' the Ministry of Development stated.

The draft law provides for the establishment of a modern safety management system for railway transport in accordance with European norms. It also includes risk assessments, new approaches to servicing rolling stock, and the implementation of European standards for the admission of drivers to work.

The path to European standards

The adoption of this draft law is part of Ukraine's commitments under the Association Agreement with the EU and the Ukraine Facility initiative. The Directorates General DG MOVE and DG NEAR have confirmed that this document complies with European requirements in the areas of safety and technical compatibility.

After government approval, the draft law will be submitted to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for consideration. It is expected to come into effect three years after publication, allowing the industry to adapt to new standards. The enacted law aims to align Ukrainian railways with European norms and ensure their interoperability by introducing new safety and technical requirements.

After being adopted by the Verkhovna Rada, the draft law will become an important step in the development of Ukrainian railway transport. Adapting to European standards will open up new opportunities for improving safety and efficiency in transportation, which is particularly relevant in the current conditions of Ukraine's integration into the European space.
