Out of 139 Russian Drones, Ukrainian Air Defense Took Down 87%.
Massive Drone Assault on Ukraine
According to UATV: On March 22, the Russian military launched a large-scale attack on Ukraine using 139 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) of various types, including the Shahed, Gerbera, and Italmas models. The drones were deployed from multiple launch points across Russia and occupied Crimea, specifically from:
- Oryol
- Kursk
- Bryansk
- Millerovo
- Shatalovo
- Primorsko-Akhtarsk
- the temporarily occupied territory of Crimea, particularly from Hvardiiske
Ukraine’s air defense systems proved highly effective, intercepting or neutralizing 127 of the 139 incoming UAVs. However, eight impacts were recorded across seven separate locations, indicating that the attackers still managed some successes. This event highlights the ongoing intensity of hostilities and the persistent threats Ukraine faces amid the war.
The Critical Role of Air Defense
This attack underscores Russia’s continued aggression toward Ukraine while also demonstrating the vital importance and effectiveness of the country’s air defense network. Despite the high number of drones shot down, the fact that hostile UAVs reached Ukrainian territory reveals an urgent need for further strengthening of defensive capabilities. The situation carries serious implications for regional security and demands sustained attention from the international community.
