Iga Swiatek sharply responded to a journalist at the US Open: what caused the scandal.
Tension at Iga Swiatek's press conference
According to The Sun: Iga Swiatek found herself in an awkward situation during the press conference following her exit from the US Open.
The Polish player was knocked out of the tournament by American Amanda Anisimova in two sets.
AlamyConflict with the journalist
Earlier in the tournament, Swiatek had an unpleasant conversation with a journalist when he asked whether she would ever wear beads in her hair.
After the match with Anisimova, the journalist asked a more serious question, but Swiatek's reaction was aggressive.
The journalist inquired how much tennis Swiatek had played and how she felt:
“There has been a lot of tennis in the last few weeks: Wimbledon, the American tournaments before that, and now this. How tired are you at the moment?”
To this, Swiatek replied:
“Well, I don't know. It's not that my matches here have been exhausting.”
Then the journalist asked if she felt the need to rest for her mental health, which many athletes have been doing lately.
Swiatek clearly did not appreciate this question and appeared offended that it was asked at all.
“Why are you saying that?”
The journalist, trying to explain, responded:
“I was just asking. It's just a lot in a row.”
She then asked the journalist about his thoughts:
“Well, talk to the people who are in charge of the schedule.”
Reaction to the question about mental health
The journalist also noted that he appeared tired and needed a break, but pointed out that they needed to get through the tournament.
It remains unclear why Swiatek reacted the way she did to the question regarding the need for rest for mental health.
Anisimova, her rival, stepped away from tennis in May 2023 but returned in January 2024, marking a successful comeback at Wimbledon and reaching the semifinals of the US Open.
This situation at the press conference underscores the tension that athletes face during major competitions, as well as the importance of mental health support in professional sports. The exchange between Swiatek and the journalist reiterates the need for careful consideration of personal questions that may evoke uncomfortable emotions in athletes.
