Amber found in Antarctica for the first time: what does it indicate.
Unique discovery of Antarctica: amber found
Scientists from the Alfred Wegener University in Antarctica have found amber for the first Time. This indicates the existence of tropical forests on this continent. The discovery of amber fragments allowed researchers to study the environmental conditions that prevailed 90 million years ago. 'This finding gives us more information about the functioning of forests in the Cretaceous period,' said researcher Johann Klages.
Research has shown that where the icy expanses are now located, there were once marshy forests with resinous trees growing. Dr. Henny Herschel explained that the amber from Antarctica contains remnants of wood, and its quality indicates that it is buried not far from the earth's surface.
This discovery has sparked interest among scientists and tourists. However, due to the increasing popularity of Antarctica as a tourist destination, the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators noted an increase in visits to this continent long before the Covid pandemic.
